With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Thomas D. Walsh Jr., known affectionately as Tom Walsh, who tragically lost his life on Thursday afternoon in a drowning incident on Saratoga Lake. He was 62 years old.
Originally from Latham, New York, Tom was a beloved member of the Cohoes community, known for his easygoing nature, sharp wit, and dedication to those he called family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, friendship, and memories that will forever echo in the lives of those who knew him.
According to New York State Police, Tom had gone for a swim from a boat without a flotation device. After some time in the water, he began to show signs of distress and slipped beneath the surface. A fellow swimmer attempted to rescue him but also became overwhelmed. That person was later saved by a passing boater, while authorities launched an extensive search for Tom, deploying an aviation unit and dive team. He was later recovered from the water.
News of Tom’s death sent waves of sorrow through the community. His friend Michael John Pierce shared on social media:
“Today has been one of the roughest days of my life. Rest in peace Tom Walsh! I will miss you. Thanks for all you did for me. Uncle Sam lanes will never be the same.”
Those who knew Tom remember his warm heart, his deep love for bowling at Uncle Sam lanes, and the way he made people feel seen and supported. Whether he was sharing a laugh, offering help, or simply being present, Tom made a difference.
He is survived by friends, extended family, and a wide circle of loved ones who are devastated by his untimely passing.
As the community mourns the loss of a man taken too soon, we hold close the memory of Tom Walsh’s generous spirit and pray for peace and comfort for those left behind.
Memorial and funeral details will be announced by the family at a later time.
